Wow les amis, what an exciting first week we had in Room 220! Here are some highlights.....
In Math, we worked together to come up with different strategies for solving addition and subtraction (addition et soustraction) problems.
In Math, we worked together to come up with different strategies for solving addition and subtraction (addition et soustraction) problems.

Some of the strategies the students came up with were:
1. Use your fingers. Utilise tes doigts.
2. Put the BIG number in your head and add on. Mets le plus grand nombre dans ta tête et ajoute à ce nombre.
3. Use pictures and symbols. Utilise les symboles et des images.
4. Count objects. Utilise des objets de manipulation.
5. 'Know it'. Juste le savoir.
6. Use a number line. Utilise notre ligne de numéros.

7. Use the 'doubles' strategy (e.g for 6+7, think of 6+6=12 and just add 1). Utilise tes doubles.
After talking about these strategies, we worked on addition review for addition facts up to 20 for the grade 2s and review double digit addition for the grade 3s. We'll be continuing to work on our number sense skills over the next few weeks.
We have also been focusing on relationships between numbers, concentrating on how to break down numbers into tens (dizaines) and ones (unités). For example, we looked at the number 18 and figured out that it includes 1 ten and 8 ones (1 dizaine et 8 unités). For the grade 3s, we're reviewing hundreds, tens, and ones. For example, the number 365 would include 3 centaines, 6 dizaines et 5 unités.
We have also been working on making patterns using multiple attributes (e.g. size, colour, direction, number, shape).
Français
In our French language classes, we've been trying to expand our writing skills by distinguishing between 'things' (e.g. nouns) and 'actions' (verbs). Last week, we worked on finding verbs and nouns that started with the same letter as the first letter of our names. This allowed the students to explore the french dictionaries and collection of books throughout the classroom. We also brainstormed as a group to think of as many french verbs as possible. Once the students found their nouns and verbs, they put them together in a short writing activity.
e.g. Je m'appelle Madame. J'aime marcher et magasiner. J'aime les machines, les marionnettes et les maisons.

We have also been working on how to form sentences for the grade 2s, while the grade 3s have been working on adding detail to make their sentences more interesting.
Art
We started some fun name art last week. Here are some of the finished products!
